Growing peppers

How to grow peppers.

In the U.K peppers are grown in high tech glasshouses (see picture). The growing process starts in the propagators where the seeds are sown and the plants are raised for about 30-50 days (depending on the growers choice). Plants are then delivered to the nursery, placed on the substrate and connected to the watering/fertilizing system.
For the first two weeks the small plants need every care to get adjusted without suffering too much stress, for example they are watered little and but often and glasshouse temperatures need to be kept the same for both day and night, once the plants are established the glasshouse night temperature can be dropped.
A 50 day old plant will have developed 4 heads (initially the plant has one head, this will split in two and eventually the two will produce another two). This is a determining time, at this time the grower has to choose the strongest 2 or 3 heads and attach each one to a string (on which they will grow until the end of the season).
After three months the first peppers will be ready to be picked, the harvesting season lasts for about 8-9 months.
At the end of the season the plants are cut down, the nursery is then cleaned and sterilized and prepared for another season.
